What Information Should Be Included in a Custom Fastener Drawing?

October 16, 2026

A clear and complete technical drawing is one of the most important documents in any custom fastener project. Whether you are sourcing special bolts, screws, studs, pins, nuts, washers, or precision fastening components, the drawing tells the manufacturer exactly what needs to be produced.

Incomplete drawings can lead to quotation delays, repeated technical questions, incorrect samples, and production errors. Understanding what information should be included in a custom fastener drawing helps engineers, OEM buyers, distributors, and purchasing teams communicate more efficiently with manufacturers and reduce sourcing risk.

1. Overall Dimensions

The drawing should clearly show all critical dimensions of the fastener.

Depending on the product, this may include:

Overall length

Thread length

Shank diameter

Head diameter

Head height

Shoulder dimensions

Hole diameter

Groove width and depth

Chamfer or radius dimensions

Dimensions should use one consistent measurement system, either metric or imperial. If a drawing combines different units, the manufacturer should be informed clearly to avoid conversion errors.

For custom fasteners, buyers should identify which dimensions are critical to assembly and which allow greater manufacturing flexibility.

2. Thread Specification

Thread information is essential for any threaded fastener.

A complete drawing should specify:

Thread diameter

Thread pitch or threads per inch

Thread standard

Thread class or tolerance

Thread length

Right-hand or left-hand thread

For example, a metric thread may be shown as M10 × 1.5, while an imperial specification may use 1/2"-13 UNC.

Buyers should also state whether the fastener requires full or partial threading and whether any special thread form is needed.

Clear thread specifications help prevent compatibility problems with nuts, tapped holes, and mating components.

3. Material and Strength Grade

The fastener material should always be identified on the drawing or related technical specification.

Common materials include:

Carbon steel

Alloy steel

Stainless steel

Brass

Aluminum

Titanium

For steel fasteners, buyers may also need to specify a strength grade or property class such as 8.8, 10.9, or 12.9.

Simply writing “steel” is usually not enough for a custom fastener project because different materials can have very different mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and manufacturing requirements.

4. Tolerances

Not every dimension requires the same level of precision.

The drawing should identify critical tolerances for features that affect fit, movement, alignment, or performance.

Examples include:

Diameter tolerance

Length tolerance

Concentricity

Position tolerance

Flatness

Perpendicularity

Thread tolerance

Overly tight tolerances can increase production cost unnecessarily, especially for high-volume custom fasteners.

Buyers should therefore specify realistic tolerances based on actual functional requirements.

5. Surface Finish and Coating

Surface treatment can affect corrosion resistance, appearance, thread fit, and product life.

The drawing should specify the required finish, such as:

Zinc plating

Hot dip galvanizing

Black oxide

Zinc flake coating

Nickel plating

Phosphate coating

Passivation

If required, include coating thickness, color, salt spray performance, or relevant coating standard.

For example, simply requesting “zinc plated” may not provide enough information if the application requires a specific corrosion resistance level.

6. Heat Treatment and Mechanical Requirements

Some custom fasteners require heat treatment to achieve the required hardness or strength.

The drawing or supporting specification may need to state:

Hardness range

Tensile strength

Yield strength

Case hardening depth

Heat treatment method

Torque requirements

These requirements are especially important for automotive, machinery, structural, and high-load fastening applications.

7. Special Features

Custom fasteners often contain features that are not found on standard products.

The drawing should clearly show details such as:

Knurling

Cross holes

Slots

Shoulders

Captive washers

Special head shapes

Reduced shanks

Drive types

Identification markings

If a feature is difficult to explain with dimensions alone, sectional views or enlarged detail views can improve clarity.

8. Applicable Standards

If the product is based on an existing standard, include the relevant reference, such as:

DIN

ISO

ASTM

ASME

ANSI

SAE

The drawing should also identify any deviations from the standard.

This is particularly useful when a custom fastener is based on a standard bolt but requires a different length, head, coating, or material.

9. Quantity and Additional Purchasing Information

Although order quantity is not always part of the technical drawing itself, it should be provided when requesting a quotation.

The manufacturer may also need to know:

Estimated annual volume

Sample quantity

Packaging requirements

Inspection requirements

Required certificates

Target delivery schedule

These details help determine the most suitable production method. For example, low-volume custom fasteners may be machined, while high-volume parts may be more economical to produce by cold forging.

A good custom fastener drawing should give the manufacturer enough information to quote, sample, inspect, and produce the part without guessing. Dimensions, threads, materials, tolerances, coatings, heat treatment, special features, and applicable standards should all be clearly defined.

For OEM buyers and engineers, providing a complete drawing at the beginning of the project can shorten quotation time, reduce sample revisions, and improve production accuracy. Working closely with an experienced custom fastener manufacturer can also help identify potential design or manufacturing issues before mass production begins.
